Toasty Kitties

Sunday, December 10th, 2006

Last night we lit the first fire of the season, and the first fire of Mac, Sunny’s and maybe Mowie’s lives.  Sunny usually lays on the brick so we expected him to love it.  Mowie frequently lays in front of the vent when the heat is blowing so we expected her to be a fan as well.  Mac doesn’t stay still long enough to notice anything, so we expected him to be playing with his toys.

As Mike started the fire, the usually well behaved Sunny was nosey and wanted in.  Once it was started he stood with his nose against the mesh thingy.  He stood like that for about 15 minutes, just staring into the fire.  Just watching him hurt my eyes, and made me hot.  Mac had the same reaction, although he wasn’t as persistant.  He stuck his nose through the little fence for a few minutes, then ran away to play.  Mowie didn’t even know there was a fire.. she’s too grown up for those curious kitten antics.

When the new-ness of the fire died down, it was Macky who layed in front of it and passed out.  Yes, Macintosh was actually sleeping, and for more than 5 minutes.  He was so happily sprawled out and caught up on some sleep he’s been missing for the past 7 months or so.  Sunny layed in front of the fire for bits at a time, I think he was getting too hot.  He does have that overly fluffy coat on, afterall.  Mowie even spent some time lounging, after the kittens walked away of course.  She wouldn’t want them to know they shared interests.

Macky update

Sunday, November 12th, 2006

A lot of you have been asking about Mac so I figured I’d post a little update, even though we don’t have any cute pictures :(

Mac went for his 4 week post surgery check up this week and we were told he was doing excellent.  What a relief since he hasn’t refrained from his crazy kitten antics when he was supposed to be taking it easy.  It’s very hard to tell a kitten not to run and play…and jump…and attack his brother…and climb the blinds…you get the idea..

Mowie has gotten used to Mac and everyone is getting along fine.  When Mac isn’t being crazy, its nice to have them all out in the living room sleeping on the floor.  Mowie seems to enjoy having the kittens around.  Now Mike and I don’t have to chase her around the living room anymore to entertain her, we leave that up to Mac and Sunny.

In other good news, Mac and Sunny seem to be maturing a little bit.  There’s not so much kitty litter kicked all over the floor, or food spilled lately.  Though they have their crazy moments, they seemed to have calmed down just a bit and are content just laying and relaxing.  They’re almost 7 months old afterall! :(

guess whooo’s back!

Mac got his stitches out yesterday!! Not without drama of course, thats not Macky’s style…

We pulled into the parking lot of Mike’s condo and turned around to tell Mac we were home and he’s completely covered in blood. Possibly the most blood I’ve ever seen come out of anyone, let alone a 7lb cat. We both panicked and were ready to turn around and bring him back to the vet, but we had no clue where he was bleeding from. He calmed down within a few seconds and we decided to bring him in and clean him up. We still have no clue what happened to him, but he immediately started playing and wasn’t in pain. Sunny managed to spit out a tooth yesterday since they are almost (1.5 days!) six months old and losing their baby teeth. Sunny didn’t bleed when he lost his at all, never mind mass amounts. Leave it to Mac to get himself in trouble again.

Lives Left:

Sunny- 9

Mowie- 8

Macintosh- 7 6.

He’s had a rough 6 months.

we want to put a video up of Mac happy to be free and with his brother again, since he’s been awfully cute, so check back :)

Happy Mac

Thursday, October 12th, 2006

Mac is definitely happy to be home. He has been purring nonstop. He’s doing well, taking his antibiotics without a fight. He managed to get the cone off of his head twice (he’s a magician) only to have it put back on again. It’s like he knows he looks ridiculous because when we put it back on him he put his head down and stared at the corner like he was upset. Poor guy, he’s getting used to it though.

Overall he’s in a great mood, he figured out how to eat with the damn thing on his head. He’s hobbling around and sleeping a lot, which is a relief to us. The more he sleeps, the less he can hurt himself. Today after breakfast I took his cone off for a little to let him clean himself. I just kept my hand over his stitches and he was happy. He’s been pissed he couldn’t clean his paws for two days. You don’t realize how long it takes cats to clean themselves until you’re holding their legs up for them and blocking them from one side of their body. It took him like an hour to do! I think I did more work during that bath than he did, but he was definitely happy and not embarassed at all. He was mad once I put the cone back on, but I think he was grateful he got a meal and a bath in without interruption. He laid with me and purred til he fell asleep, where he still is.

We think Mowie and Sunny have crushes on each other. They’ve definitely come a long way. I’m sure the mutual lonliness helps. She’s not tense anymore and usually just plays the role of bitchy teenage sister, while Sunny is the annoying little brother. She’ll be laying in the sun and he has to smack her or bite her tail, then she yells at him. Today I caught her kissing him in the kitchen…I wasn’t supposed to let anyone know…

By next week they’ll be cuddling.

Stitch removal countdown… 13 days!

Home Sweet Home!

Wednesday, October 11th, 2006

Mac is finally home from the hospital! We thought he wouldn’t be home til tonight/tomorrow but luckily he was doing great and they set him free!

However, Macky is NOT happy. They put one of those cones on his head! Poor guy, he’s embarassed. He walked into a few walls, then he forced his head into the litter box (his favorite place of course). He couldn’t wait to get in that thing, yes we have another litter box for him, but he didn’t want to wait for me to set it up.

Sunny is scared of the cone on his head, since poor Mac went to run up to him and hit him in the face with it. He just wanted some kisses from his brother! Finally Sunny realized that if he stuck his head inside the cone, he could lick Mac’s face, too cute. But, I had to separate them so that Sunny wouldn’t try to play or lick Mac’s stitches. I set up a little bed for him in Mike’s walk in closet and he passed right out.. I think he feels safer in a small area. We were told to crate him but we figured we’ll see how the empty closet goes, since theres no where for him to jump in there anyway.

Guess I’m sleeping in the closet.

New stuff!

The About section is finally up and running.  Be sure to click at the bottom of the page for Mac and Sunny’s story.  I know it takes a long time to load, but there’s a lot of previously unseen pictures.  I’m in the process of adding more and I’ll fix the slowness tomorrow :)  Hopefully they’ll be more new things coming here soon, so stay tuned!

Kittens, orphans and much more!

Friday, September 15th, 2006

Wednesday marked Mac and Sunny’s third round of shots. Mac weighed in at an even 7lbs and Sunny barely beat him once again a 7lbs 3 oz. They are not even close to full size yet, they’re only 4 and a half months and they’re 7 lbs each! I could barely hold the cat carrier up the stairs with the two of them in there! Mowie is an adult cat and is just over 8lbs..and she’s much larger in size than the kittens are. We’re going to have some tigers on our hands!

In other vet updates, Mac seems to have an infection in his eye. He’s had a runny eye since, well he was born. Recently it got worse and we brought it to the vet’s attention. She gave us some ointment to squirt in his eye twice a day. At first we thought he’d hate us, but he seems to enjoy it. It must be soothing to him. If the ointment doesn’t work within the week he’ll need antibiotics. That was the only major issue the two of them had, despite Sunny’s random wheezing a few days before. Even though it didn’t seem to stop him from playing, it was scary. He must have just had a little cold because the vet said his lungs sounded good.

Mowie is still homeless. During the week, we decided to work on her relationship with Mac and Sunny and try to keep her. However, their interactions became more and more violent. I have 5 cats at home who were introduced at different times and I have never witnessed anything like this. It was like watching the discovery channel lions attack a deer. And the boys never fought back. I knew something was strange with her, whether she was just a little nutty or even bipolar, she would be sitting on my lap one minute then flipping out the next.

After some google diagnosis, I discovered that her behavior is actually normal of declawed cats. After a cat is declawed, it becomes very nervous and uncomfortable around other cats (which would explain Mowie’s making her self sick over the kittens). They become aggressive as a way to say that they are still tough and can still protect themselves. They also bite more in general, which Mowie does too. I found some bulletin board type thing where many cat owners had the same experience we’re having with Mowie- they brought home a declawed cat and was nervous the cats with claws would hurt her, but the opposite happened. All of them said the cats with claws never scratched the declawed cat and learned to ignore it, as if they knew not to pick on someone who couldn’t defend themselves. It turns out that Mowie’s crazy behavior is just compensating for her lack of self-confidence. How sadly psychological :(

Some offered hope in cats that learned to tolerate each other, but we want Mowie to be happy and comfortable. The less stress that is placed on her the better. So we are still looking to find her a home, preferably with no other pets, where she could get lots of love and attention. She may never be happy here with Mac and Sunny, and we’re learning to accept it (or trying to).

Kitty news

Wednesday, August 30th, 2006

I know there has been a lot about mowie on here lately, but don’t worry, we haven’t been neglecting mac and sunny!  They’re still being kittens, getting fat bellys and chasing toys around.  They are very understanding that mommy has been caring for a stray, after all, mac was standing in mowie’s paws just about 3 months ago.

We’ve been so caught up in mowie madness that we forgot to post that mac and sunny’s 4 month birthday was on Sunday!  Happy Birthday boys!

Mowie’s antibiotics seem to be working wonders, as her red spots and scabs are completely gone and her hair is filling in nicely!  Her fur no longer feels like a brillo pad, as my mom said, and her coat is nice and soft.  Its hard to give her attention in my garage because we don’t have to pass through there to get in the house.  Its also a garage so its not like we can casually hang out in there.  Today i sat on her bed and she cuddled right into my lap and fell asleep while purring.  What a perfect cat.  However, she needs to be in a house where theres people walking around and such.  Hopefully she will soon :/

Macintosh, So Cute

Saturday, August 5th, 2006

It’s a pleasure to say that Macintosh has won the “Cute-Kitten-For-a-Day” award*. Just check out some of the pictures below — he was so mushy today and so photogenic. Enjoy.

**Disclaimer** There is no such award — I do not play favorites. Sunny, sure enough, will soon have his own entry filled with cute pictures.

Bye Mac

Saturday, June 10th, 2006

Two weeks ago, I was psyched to go on this cruise. I mean totally psyched — new places to see, a new adventure, and certainly time away from the rib-joint and Rutgers.

And now? As we leave for the cruise tomorrow afternoon? My feelings have certainly changed. I never imagined how a little kitten could impact my feelings. He’s such an incredible little guy and already holds so much of my love. I’m sure going to miss him. I plan on bringing him home some sunglasses, maybe some Bahamas sand, too. Oh, and a neat little pina colada umbrella, too.

I miss him so much already and I haven’t even left New Jersey yet. :(

The good news? We just might be coming home to Mac and one of his brothers or sisters. Keep your fingers crossed! Two bundles of joy! If it’s a boy, I’m hoping to name him Pixel. And a girl? Maggie or Pixie. Regardless, we gave full naming rights to Rebecca’s parents. I just hope they keep our suggestions in their thoughts. ;)

Stay tuned, see you in a week or so!
